UNDERSTANDING YOUR AUDIENCE

It’s harder than ever for FE & HE Institutions to stand out. It’s a competitive market, with over 160 Universities in the UK, 230 colleges and a wealth of remote learning opportunities for prospective students to choose from.

Your audience are digital natives, raised on rich, streamable stories and bite-size online content. Online video is where you need to focus your efforts, but you need to do it right.

Marketing for educational Institutions tend to rely on general messaging about future success, or the student experience. However, these messages are no longer cutting it with the Gen-Z demographic.

Your audience abhor inauthenticity, a corporate approach and are not easily fooled by a mere strap-line.

What they do care about are brand values, and what your institution represents. They want to see their own positive values reflected back at them. However, to convey that to your audience, you need authentic stories and content, rich in detail and emotionally engaging.

THIS IS UEA

The University of East Anglia

This is UEA was the primary recruitment tool for the University of East Anglia in 2019.

The final film received over 1,308,000 views, and achieved an 87% view-through rate; the highest of all of UEA’s 400+ videos. Furthermore, it was awarded our latest CASE Award.

Most notably, UEA fulfilled 101% of its recruitment quota that year – one of only three UK Universities to do so.

Trends in Educational Video Production for 2024

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is having a huge impact on video production in the educational space, especially in E-Learning content. AI tools are now making it possible to script e-learning content and have it delivered by a realistic AI human model and VoiceOver.

Younger demographics are consuming their video on a wide range if devices and platforms, videos and animations are no longer just prepared for landscape, 16:9 viewing. Today, you should consider how to repurpose your content for square, vertical and short viewing options.

With the continuing growth of `TikTok, the platform is a first point of call for many younger generations. However, TikTok is seeking to replace YouTube as the source for informative and educational content, which is just perfect for Colleges & Universities to showcase useful information while raising the profile of their institution.

Helpful Information

How much do educational video productions typically cost?

As we’ve seen on this page, there are a wide variety of video formats for educational institutions, this makes suggesting a single cost very hard. However, we estimate that for a single project with cutdowns for social medias, you should be looking at costs starting at £15k for a high-quality production. However, an impactful commercial hero film for your institution could cost between £40k – £100k.

Why do schools and universities make video content?

Schools, Colleges and Universities have a younger audience that most other organisations. Gen-Z and Gen Alpha are the most relevant demographics for educational institutions and these audiences prefer to consume video than any other format online. Ensuring your key messages, core offerings and USPs are articulated through video ensures you are reaching the right audience, and in the way they like to be informed.

How long should films for universities or schools be?

Video content today has be short, and to the point and video for educational institutions is the same.

The most effective video duration is 60 – 90 seconds, but it cane argued in the educational sector that is is a good guide for your informational and hero content, but you should also consider 20 – 30 second pieces of content for socials – as this is where your core audiences will be.

I’ve worked with Lambda Films on a variety of projects relating to environmental resilience and human safety. Our projects have required working across a number of countries, and in challenging situations and locations. Regardless, each project has been flawlessly organised, and executed and we’re incredibly pleased with the results. They have fulfilled our brief, and enabled us to follow our strategic plan in educating at-risk communities.

I have to say that this project exceeded our expectations. The attitude of the team really stood out, as they worked hard to get things just right. They challenged thinking where they believed they could improve things, and nothing seemed too much for them. They were also first rate in their communication and reliability and definitely added immense value and creativity to this project.
